Barroux Castle
Castle History
Set atop a rocky hill in Provence, Barroux Castle watches over rolling vineyards and timeless villages. The stronghold was first constructed in the 12th century to defend the region against Saracen raids and protect nearby trade routes. Early medieval lords expanded its defensive walls to establish greater authority over the surrounding lands. During the Renaissance, the structure was transformed into a more comfortable residence while still maintaining its military purpose. Its thick towers and ramparts reflect the shifting needs of both war and noble living through the centuries. The Wars of Religion in the 16th century brought damage and unrest, leaving portions of the fortress weakened. A major restoration in the 17th century revived its grandeur and fortified its role in regional governance. The French Revolution dealt a harsher blow, as the castle was looted and set on fire by revolutionaries. For decades it stood partially ruined, a dramatic silhouette against the Provençal sky. In the 20th century, a dedicated private owner undertook extensive work to restore the medieval and Renaissance features. The reconstruction preserved historic stonework, vaulted rooms, and impressive defensive lines. Today, Barroux Castle hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and historical tours that celebrate its storied past. Its elevated position offers sweeping views of Mont Ventoux and the lush countryside. Standing proudly once more, Barroux Castle reflects the resilience and layered history of Provence across nearly nine centuries.
