Tossa de Mar Castle
Castle History
Rising above the Mediterranean on a rugged headland, this walled stronghold defines the skyline of one of Catalonia's most picturesque coastal towns. Tossa de Mar Castle's origins date back to the 12th century, when fortifications were constructed to protect the settlement from seaborne threats. The walls were built primarily to defend against pirate raids that plagued the coastline. Thick stone ramparts and watchtowers allowed early warning of approaching ships. Three main cylindrical towers anchored the defensive circuit along the cliffs. Within the walls, a small medieval town once thrived, complete with houses, streets, and a church. The fortress played a key role in safeguarding trade and fishing activities. Over time, improvements were made to adapt to changing military needs. By the late Middle Ages, the defenses had reached their greatest extent. As piracy declined, the settlement expanded beyond the walls. The old fortified town gradually lost its residential importance. Many interior buildings fell into ruin while the walls endured. In the 20th century, restoration efforts revived the historic enclosure. Artists and writers were drawn to the dramatic setting overlooking the sea. Today, visitors can walk along the ramparts and towers. Panoramic views stretch across beaches, cliffs, and open water. Tossa de Mar Castle remains a powerful symbol of coastal defense, medieval life, and the enduring relationship between town and sea.
