Castle History

Rising above the Vltava River, this magnificent residence is often considered one of the most beautiful castles in the Czech Republic. Its origins trace back to the 13th century, when a Gothic stronghold was first constructed on the site. Over the centuries, the structure passed through the hands of several noble families, each leaving architectural traces. A major transformation began after the Schwarzenberg family acquired the estate in the 17th century. The castle underwent extensive Baroque renovations, giving it a more elegant and courtly appearance. In the 19th century, it was redesigned once again—this time in the romantic Neo-Gothic style inspired by England's Windsor Castle. The Schwarzenbergs invested heavily in the makeover, creating lavish interiors filled with intricate woodwork, tapestries, and ornate ceilings. Elaborate gardens, terraces, and parklands were added, turning the surrounding landscape into a picturesque estate. For generations, the castle served as a luxurious family residence and a symbol of aristocratic prestige. During the 20th century, political upheavals led to the property being seized by the state. Despite these changes, much of the interior décor and artistry remained intact. Extensive restoration efforts preserved the castle's romantic character and historical features. Today, the site welcomes visitors who come to admire its fairytale architecture and grand furnished rooms. The castle stands as a shining example of Czech heritage, blending medieval origins with lavish 19th-century design.
