Powderham Castle's story began in the late 14th century when a fortified manor was established to secure land and influence in Devon. The core structure was built for the Courtenay family, whose power shaped the region for generations. Unlike many castles, it evolved more as a stately home than a purely military stronghold. Defensive features such as towers and battlements were balanced with elegant living quarters. During the Wars of the Roses, the estate became entangled in shifting allegiances and noble rivalries. The Tudor period brought significant expansion, reflecting changing tastes and domestic priorities. Later Georgian and Victorian alterations added symmetry, comfort, and ornate decoration. Despite its noble status, the house did not escape conflict during the English Civil War. It was occupied by Parliamentarian forces, who inflicted damage but did not destroy it. The family later restored and modernized the interiors, preserving its long continuity of ownership. Rare furnishings, portraits, and tapestries tell the story of centuries of English aristocratic life. The surrounding deer park and gardens were carefully shaped to complement the estate's grandeur.
