Castle History

Overlooking the town of Feldkirch, this medieval stronghold is one of the best-preserved castles in the Vorarlberg region. Its construction began around the early 13th century under Count Hugo I of Montfort, the founder of Feldkirch. The castle quickly became the administrative and residential center for the powerful Montfort dynasty. Throughout the Middle Ages, it played a strategic defensive role due to its elevated position above important trade routes. Several expansions and fortifications were added over the centuries as threats and military technology evolved. By the 15th and 16th centuries, the structure had grown into a substantial complex with towers, courtyards, and reinforced walls. After the Montfort line sold the territory to the Habsburgs, the castle shifted from a noble residence to a regional administrative seat. Earthquakes, fires, and changing political needs led to periods of decline and partial disrepair. Local citizens took an active role in preserving the castle beginning in the 19th century, recognizing its historical importance. Restoration efforts gradually returned the complex to stability while respecting its medieval character. Today, the castle houses one of the region's most comprehensive local history museums. Exhibits explore everything from medieval weaponry and craftsmanship to Feldkirch's civic development. Visitors can still walk through original chambers, battlements, and the impressive knights' hall. The fortress now stands as a cultural landmark, showcasing centuries of Montfort legacy and Austrian regional heritage.
