Gosselin Castle
Castle History
Rising above the River Oust in southern Brittany, this magnificent fortress has shaped local history for more than a millennium. Originally founded around the year 1008 by Guéthénoc, Viscount of Porhoët, Gosselin Castle took its name from his son Goscelinus, reflecting deep familial roots in the early medieval era. The earliest fortification began as a simple stronghold that controlled a strategic river crossing and trade route in the Breton hinterland. During the 12th century, the castle was twice demolished by Henry II of England-who even sowed salt into the ruins to prevent future growth-an act that underscored its importance in regional power struggles. Its rebirth in the 14th century came under Olivier V de Clisson, the famed Breton knight and statesman, who transformed it into a formidable granite fortress with multiple towers and massive curtain walls. The castle's history is marked by feuds, sieges, and shifting allegiances during the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion, when its battlements witnessed the turbulence of Breton and French politics. By the 19th century, the castle had fallen into a degraded state, inspiring the Duchess of Berry to urge its restoration; work began around 1835 and continued for decades, reviving both exterior and interior. Today, the castle remains a family residence of the Dukes of Rohan, making it one of the rare medieval châteaux in France still lived in by descendants of its historical owners. Its interior includes a remarkable Doll and Toy Museum housed in the former stables, reflecting the eclectic legacy of centuries of aristocratic life. The dual architectural identity-formidable medieval fortress on one side, elegant Renaissance residence on the other-makes it a singular monument in Brittany. From its strategic river valley roots to its romantic restoration, Gosselin Castle encapsulates the sweeping arc of French history, blending martial legacy, artistic evolution, and continuous habitation.
