Castle History

Rising above the town of Kefermarkt in Upper Austria, Weinberg Castle has dominated the landscape for centuries. Its earliest construction began in the 13th century, when local nobles established a fortified residence to secure their lands. Over time, the structure grew into a substantial stronghold with defensive walls and towers. The estate later came under the ownership of the prominent Zelking and Starhemberg families, who expanded and refined it. During the Renaissance, the castle was transformed from a purely military fort into a grand noble residence. Elegant architectural details, larger windows, and more comfortable living spaces marked this new era. The surrounding region benefited from the castle's role as a local administrative center. In the 17th and 18th centuries, futher modifications added baroque touches that enhanced its stately character. Periods of war and shifting political dynamics occasionally threatened the estate but never led to its destruction. The castle's rich furnishings, artworks, and historical archives reflected the status of its aristocratic owners. After various transitions in ownership, the property eventually came under public stewardship. Restoration and preservation efforts in the 20th century helped protect its medieval and Renaissance features. Today visitors can explore its grand halls, courtyards, and impressive rooms, many of which retain their historical atmosphere. Standing high above the countryside, the fortress remains a powerful symbol of Upper Austria's noble heritage and architectural legacy.
