Český Krumlov Castle
Castle History
Perched above the Vltava River, Český Krumlov dominates one of the most picturesque towns in the Czech Republic. Its origins date back to the 13th century when the Rosenberg family established it as a Gothic stronghold. The castle served as a strategic center for controlling trade routes and the surrounding lands. Over the centuries, successive expansions added Renaissance and Baroque elements to the original Gothic structure. The Rosenbergs transformed the castle into a luxurious residence, blending defensive features with elegant living quarters. Extensive gardens and courtyards were laid out to complement the architecture and display the family's wealth. In the 17th century, ownership passed to the powerful Eggenberg family, who continued renovations and artistic enhancements. Later, the Schwarzenberg family took control, leaving their mark on both interiors and the surrounding landscape. The castle's Baroque theater, one of the oldest in Europe, remains remarkably preserved. Its tall towers, winding staircases, and fortified walls reflect the evolution from medieval fortress to aristocratic palace. Despite wars, fires, and political changes, the complex retained much of its historic character. The castle houses extensive collections of art, furniture, and period artifacts that illustrate centuries of noble life. Visitors can explore the castle's courtyards, towers, and grand halls while enjoying panoramic views of the town below. Standing as a symbol of Czech cultural heritage, Český Krumlov continues to captivate historians, tourists, and art lovers alike.
